Does under eye puffiness have you feeling like a bag-lady (or man) these days?

Those bags may make you look old but they are not caused by your age or your attitude.

Under eye bags are usually just fluid or fat accumulation and there are things you can do to eliminate the puff and improve your overall health at the same time.

If severe, under eye puffiness may signal a medical condition so check with your doctor if it persists. But otherwise occasional puffiness from fluid and/or fat build up caused by allergies, crying, dehydration, toxicity, poor quality or excess sleep and water retention can be eliminated.

Why the Puff?

  • If a sluggish liver is fattening you up, give Milk Thistle a try. This hardy plant with its bushy pink flower is a workhorse at detoxifying and supporting the liver.

If you drink alcohol, have hepatitis or have been subjected to excess environmental toxins, chemicals or medications,
    your liver is suffering.

Milk thistle extract can repair damage and prevent further damage. This natural remedy is also useful in lowering cholesterol and reducing the spread of some cancers. Side effects are few but occasionally milk thistle may cause digestive problems or allergic reactions. As always, check with your doctor before adding to your diet.

  • In Traditional Chinese Medicine, eye puffiness is said to be the result of dis-ease with the colon or kidneys. This makes perfect senses, as again, toxic build-up and water retention are the culprits.
  • If you are experiencing general aching and weakness in the lower back and knees, blurred vision, poor memory, night sweats, frequent urination, dizziness and ringing in the ears, TCM points to kidney deficiencies.

Black beans and sesame seeds are great tonics for the kidneys. Keep your colon moving with a detox diet, a juice fast or Hollywood's favorite: the colon cleanse (get your doctor's approval first).

  • Water content can be as high as 70% in lean tissue but is often only 10% in fat tissue.  Obvious thirst is your first sign of dehydration but we often mistake thirst for hunger so sip on water throughout the day and keep track of the number of ounces you're drinking until it becomes a habit. Other signs of dehydration are found here.
  • Sleeping on a flat pillow may cause pooling of fluid so make sure your head is slightly elevated. Wedge pillows are great to try if you notice a lot of puffiness upon rising. Get good quantity and quality sleep but not more than you need;  if 7-8 hours per night isn't enough for you, check with your doctor.
  • Eye creams and gels that contain antioxidants and vitamin C will fight free radicals that are causing damage to delicate tissue. They can also relieve and hydrate irritated eye tissue with ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile and algae and cucumber extracts while contracting the underlying blood vessels.
  • If all else fails, but only as a last resort, transconjunctival blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure where orbital fat is removed from under the eye. While scarring is minimal, complications are not.

Incisions in the delicate eye area can cause weakening and sagging of the skin and muscle. The procedure can also result in vision damage, corneal abrasions, decreased or abnormal sensation in the eyelids, problems closing the eyes and dry or tearing eye syndrome.

Try healthy living and listen to your own body and mind in
creating better health and ageless beauty.
