At a Starbucks I used to frequent, two of the barristers continuously mistook me for another espresso junky. At first, I thought they were just friendly but, in time, it was apparent that there was someone in Seattle who had more in common with me than just the addiction.

Her sporadic appearances have spanned many years and she has engaged numerous people I later encountered who asked me odd questions about baseball games I didn't attend, outfits I never owned and vacations I have only hoped to go on.

My shadow twin has changed my attitude about the world as I thought I knew it. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I have yet to meet with up with this other me.

The Theories of Other Yous

  • The belief of twin spirits, soulmates, shadow twins and so on has a long and rich history.  Unlike a romantic soulmate, who some of us are lucky enough to find, one theory of the twin spirit is of existing on third dimensional planes with bodies you previously occupied in another incarnation.

It's really hard to visualize these
third dimensional "you" out there
and a little scary to think you
just might run into one of them.

  • The evil twin of good sci-fi stories would appear similar to the law of polarity where every element must have a direct opposite. Except of course the physical person is an exact duplicate who is acting out a dual but opposite role.
  • Another theory is that your soul is just passing by in a parallel universe.  Hugh Everett was a Princeton University doctoral candidate in the 1950's when he came up with an amazing hypothesis that parallel universes exist because every choice available to us actually happens;  if not here then in a parallel universe.

The future physicist called his theory the Many-Worlds theory and his research was not just for fun but an attempt to demystify the bizarre and erratic findings of quantum physics. To date, the Many-Worlds theory is still considered scientifically plausible.

  • More current postulation is that parallel universes may be extremely close to us, atomically close but perhaps on a higher frequency. What we understand to be spirits, ghosts and imaginary friends are just others living in a really close parallel universe.
  • Neuroscience have also enter the parallel universe debate by theorizing that altered states of awareness, schizophrenia, sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming are but a simple step over the parallel line so to speak.
  • Shamans, those that define themselves as intermediaries between the human and spirit worlds, readily engage in Shamanism journeys to parallel universes.  Likewise, the state of higher consciousness obtained through meditation is considered a crossing over to that higher frequency level.

Until We Meet Again

All said, none of these theories explain who that woman in Seattle is that looks so much like me that strangers have doubted me when I assure them we've not previously met.

What I do know of her is that she is much more extroverted that I, likes sports and coffee, knows a lot of people in Seattle, may work in the legal profession as I do and makes frequent appearances then is not seen for long periods.  Since everyone that mistakes me for her is pleasantly glad to see me "again,"  I'm sure she is working in my best interest.

The fact that my twin exists at some level is both unsettling and astounding. She allows me to see the universe - this one and the parallel ones - as the truly amazing thing it/they are.

I think we all have spirit twins and I hope you are lucky enough to get glimpses of  yours in action.  If you have, can you leave me a comment?
