Madonna - (8/16-1958) -51.
Madonna Louise Ciccone moved to New York City to pursue a career in modern dance at the age of 19. Six years later she released her first album, Madonna, and the rest is history.
Madonna had hit after outrageous hit while shocking conservatives and gaining the wrath of the Vatican with her mega-hit Like a Virgin. Loving every minute of the naughty-girl attention, Madonna followed up with the album Erotica, the coffee table book Sex and the erotic thriller Body of Evidence.
Either her growing maturity or her endless talent led her to the role of Evita and Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress and Best Original Song for You Must Love Me. Still Madonna continued to use sex to drive her career.
The Times, a UK daily newspaper, said of Madonna "...whether you like her or not, she started a revolution.... and made the female body seem more like a machine with cravings, rather than a Barbie doll.”
As it often does, motherhood was to change Madonna's values. She became involved in Eastern mysticism and Kabbalah after her daughter's birth and the album Ray of Light reflected this change.
Madonna was married to Sean Penn for four stormy years and Guy Ritchie, ten years her junior, for nine years. Madonna and Ritchie had two children together, daughter Lourdes and son Rocco. Madonna adopted three year old David Banda and four year old Mercy James from Malawi.
