When you think of turmeric what probably comes to mind are dishes from India or Asia. But you would be far better off thinking of this tangy orange-yellow spice as way to ward off Alzheimer's disease.  Curcuma is the active ingredient in turmeric, which is a perennial plant in the ginger family and has bitter, pungent and astringent qualities.

Alzheimer’s is named after German doctor Alois Alzheimer, who first documented his research of the disease in 1906. Alzheimer's is not a normal part of the aging process; it is damaged and dying brain cells that eventually kill its host. This disease is brought on by a build up of plaques and tangles; both proteins that collect between the nerve cells and inside dying cells.

For reasons not quite understood, turmeric reduced the accumulation of the offending proteins in the brain. It is known that turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that reduce oxidative or free radical damage throughout the body. Free radicals do to the body what moisture does to steel or air to cut fruit. Inflammation is responsible for many chronic conditions and a decline in general health.

In Ayurveda Medicine (traditional medicine in India), turmeric is used for a wide variety of aliments including allergies, stomach, skin and respiratory problems, diarrhea, menstrual pain, burns, and urinary tract disorders. Current research indicates it's good for just about everything that could go wrong with the body including cancer, cystic fibrosis, Crohn’s disease, asthma, diabetes, acne and even HIV and aids.

You don't have to learn how to cook Indian or Asian food to enjoy the health benefits of turmeric. Eating just 1/4 to 1 teaspoon of turmeric daily can boost your immune system and give you an anti-aging advantage over Alzheimer's. Just add a pinch of turmeric to soups, stews casseroles, sauces, dressings and baked goods. Keeping a spice mix on the kitchen counter will remind you to use it often.
