While estrogen and testosterone get all the press for taking us for a ride, another hormone isn't getting the attention it deserves. DHEA or Dehydroepiandrosterone, is the most abundant steroid in the human body. It is produced by the adrenal glands and starts to decrease in production around age 30.
The Good
This decreased production has prompted numerous anti-aging studies of supplemental DHEA. From Alzheimer's to heart disease to breast cancer, DHEA's effectiveness has had mixed results.
While it's no miracle fix for aging, DHEA has been shown effective in treating skin rashes, Lupus, depression, adrenal insufficiency and arthritis. Because DHEA supplements are used by some to build muscle mass, the U.S. Senate considered classifying DHEA as a controlled substance in 2009. Review of the matter is still pending. DHEA has also been blamed for causing heart palpitation in some supplement users.
The Beautiful
Hormone replacement therapy is always a controversial subject. While DHEA supplements may or may not pose risk to some, DHEA creams offer the opportunity to reap the benefits of this hormone topically. Topical DHEA is ready absorbed by skin.
