In the never ending quest for the fountain of anti-aging, researchers in Italy think they have the answer: Tobacco.
But don't light up just yet. It isn't the nicotine but the sugar peptides in tobacco plants that are being credited for their antioxidant properties and ability to promote collagen production.
The sugar peptides increase the cellular response of Sirtuins (SIRT); proteins responsible for regulating cellular and DNA repair and that are thought to be linked to aging.
This research is being lead by Dr. Fabio Apone at Arterra Bioscience, a company whose focus is on agricultural protection. His efforts to find natural products that activate the defense responses in plants may be a promising boom for anti-aging cosmetics.
This irony is not lost on tobacco growers who have gone from boom to bust after Congress passed the Cigarette Labelling and Advertising Act in 1965. The time spent on failed efforts to hide and defend the dangers of nicotine would have been better spent on finding the health benefits of this natural plant.
Instead of paying out millions of dollars to smokers who were robbed of their health and even their lifes, tobacco companies could have been raking in millions on anti-aging skin care products.
Smoking tobacco not only destroys the lungs and damages
the heart and other organs, it can add an estimated
20 years to the condition of the skin.
Tobacco inhaled causes both a drying effect on the skin’s surface and a restriction of blood vessels that provide it oxygen and vital nutrients. Smoking tobacco accelerate the skin's aging process by literally starving the skin, which accounts for the ashen look of a smoker's complexion and gauntness of facial features.
Unfortunately, the tobacco companies appear to still be in the dark about the prosperity inherent in their product and no skin care manufacturer has latched on to Dr. Apone's anti-aging find just yet. While we all await their awakening to the health benefits of tobacco, there is time to lose the smoking habit and reap the anti-aging health benefits not inhaling.
