Want to know how long you are going to live? There's an app for that. Well, not yet but there is a test that will, no doubt, find its way to an IPod at some point.

By summer, scientists think they will have the ability to read your genetic signature and determine whether  it's in your DNA to live a long life or ... not says Thomas Perls, associate professor of medicine at Boston University where the longevity studies took place with some 1000+ centenarians.

Scientists are worried that if people fail the test, it will lead to reckless behavior and poor health habits. There is also a real concern that health care providers, life insurance companies and others will make DNA policy decisions based on such data.

But before you start wondering about the repercussions, relax; only about 15% of us stand a chance, genetically, of living a very long life. Add the hazards we face and our bad habits and it's a wonder anyone lives much past 60.

So a pass or fail on the longevity test would seem to have about as much value as a roll of the dice in Las Vegas.   It's silly to think the reason people won't take care of themselves is because they discover they are generically predisposed to die before their 86th birthday.

Most of us fail to believe that we will ever grow old
until the moment we are there.

But more importantly, who cares?  Even those with the longest living DNA can still take their last breath long before those genes wear out.  There's simply no guarantee found in anyone's DNA.

The biggest reason for taking care of yourself isn't to live longer but to live healthier.  Unfortunately, that is not a choice many people make.

You can even make a descent living by turning others trash into treasures through websites like Craigslist and ebay.

• If you are artistically inclined, you can turn yours and other people's stuff into art sculptures.
• If it's old, it's vintage and has tons of appeal to a lot of people. Find out it's story (everything with age has one) and sell the human interest along with the item.
• A little paint can hide a host of sins.  A little tender loving care can go a long way in creating a real treasure find.
• Give it new purpose. We all like to reinvent ourselves and you can do the same with what looks like junk.  Just one or a few pages of an old and damaged book can be turned into a framed piece of art. Old stoneware can be turned into mosaic designs to top a damaged table.

• To get that fresh pink of a newborn, you'll paint your pre-Reborn with acrylic paints in flesh or beige, white, pink and violet. The process is called purple washing. Experienced Reborn artists use purple paint but unless your intent is a Martian baby, stick with the multiple colors in the beginning.
• Try to mix one batch so a remixed doesn't look mismatched. The trick is to paint inside the body and head so the colors shin through the vinyl. Using a fan tip brush, take your time to thinly but evenly coat the entire body and head. Hold the pre-reborn up to the light to make sure you have covered it completely.

• Set your paint by baking your pre-reborn at 260 degrees Fehr. for 6-8 minutes. Set your paint with re-baking after each painting.
• Once baked,  give your pre-reborn that rosy glow. You can use acrylic paint or stencil crème and your fingers. Don't go crazy here; just a dab on the checks, chin, nose, ears, forehead, lips, nails, chest, belly, elbows, knees, palms of hands and soles of feet. Now blend well until it looks natural and not like a makeup application.

Ever wish you could turn off the world for just a little while? You can by going on a silent retreat.

So pack your bags to restore mental health and peace of mind AND anti-age by going on a different kind of vacation.

What You Can Expect at a Silent Retreat

Simple: no cell phone (not even texting), IPod, radio, TV or talking. No noise except those of nature.... ahhh.

Retreats are usually offered by religious or spiritual groups like the  Southern Dharma Retreat Center in Hot Springs, North Carolina were programs are available for a few days to several months.

Retreat agendas can include prayer, yoga, meditation and structured lectures or question periods for guidance and information. Nonsectarian retreats are also available as well as those composed entirely of quiet reflection with no goal in mind other than the elimination of artificial noise.

Meals, also taken in silence, are usually light, fresh and vegetarian. The locations range from mountain to desert to sea but are always as far from noise pollution as possible.

Of course, you can go it alone but a group of like minded people will allow you to experience a completely different way of interacting with your fellow humans.

In our information overloaded world and media rich society, silent retreats offer the opportunity to take a mental deep breath and actually hear what is going on in your own mind without verbal distractions.

If you've ever returned from a family vacation more rattled than when you left, you have experienced stimulation strain. Silence retreats seek to eliminate all forms of stimulation.

WHO's theme for today's World Health Day is Health Facilities in Emergencies.

The focus on making health clinics and hospitals safe at times they are most needed stems from disasters such as the 2001, 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Gujurat, India that destroyed 3,812 health facilities and from the 2004, South-East Asian tsunami, which damaged or destroyed hundreds of health care facilities across the region.

While hospital related deaths, superbug MRSA infections and sky rocketing medical malpractice lawsuits and insurance costs make the US news, the "health care crisis" is,  as are so many of our American woes, lacking perspective.  Of course, everyone should have safe and high quality medical care and we should not wish less for ourselves or others regardless of the world's insanity...however...

It's good to set aside our complaints for this one day and
reflect on some true  health care crises and the realities
that so many in our world experience every day.

• April 5, 2009 -- Sri Lanka’s so called no-fire zone is known as  a no-food,  no-care, no-safety zone.  The zone's  healthcare system has collapased and just one temporary makeshift hospital is operational. A school building at Puthu Maththalan has been converted into a surgical center; its playground is  now the mortue. Doctors do what they can to help the unfortunate who reside in the zone such as 24 year old Prasad Siva­tharsany who gave birth last month with army shrapnel in her arm and in her newborn baby's  thigh.  Prasad and her baby were  lucky, two days earlier an expectant mother and her six month old fetus died from shell injuries including shrapnel that had severed the baby's feet.
  
• April 3, 2009 -- Zimbabwe's recent cholera epidemic  has claimed over 4,100 lives so far and the healthcare system is in ruins.  Zimbabwe's average life expectancy is the lowest in world having dropped from 62 to 36 years. HIV/AIDS claims  an estimated 400 lives every day.
• March 29, 2009 -- Uganda’s failing health system is being blamed, in part, on the mass exodus of doctors from the country.  Government hospital doctors earn about $450 USD per month. To supplement their income, many sell donated medicines on the black market.  Lack of medication has led to an epidemic of tuberculosis and drug-resistant TB in Uganda, killing nearly two million people per year. WHO, currently meeting with other international health officials in Beijing,  warn that resistant strains of TB circulating in the world's population are set to spiral out of control.
• March 22, 2009 --  In India, "rag picker"  are children who rummage through garbage to collect syringes to sell to back alley "doctors"  who make money off the sick with deadly injections. The filthy needles kill an estimated 300,000 people per year.
• March 17, 2009 -- There is fear of a meningitis outbreak in Kalma Camp Darfur with 100,000 people needing vaccination, however, health service are significantly lacking  since Doctors Without Borders was expelled by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir who is ridding the country  of all foreign aid groups.
• February 7, 2009 -- 300 patients were moved from the last operational hospital in war torn Puthukkudiyiruppu Sri Lanka as bombing sought to destroy the facility.  Lucky patients are now camped in a community center in Puttumatalan; unlucky ones are outside with their IV drips strung from trees.
• February 5, 2009 -- 5,000 bottles of fake diabetes medication has been found in two Chinese provinces.  So far, two patients are confirmed dead.
• February 2, 2009 -- Austrian power company EVN, will cut electricity to local Devin hospital and in Plovdiv's lung treatment facility due to unpaid bills. The hospitals are negotiating an extension to resolve the matter but the situation remains critical.
• January 31, 2009 -- Five newborn babies in Punjab, India were killed after a short circuit caused phototherapy units to catch fire. Ten babies were in the therapy units for treatment of jaundice. The other newborns suffered serious burns. The families of the babies will be paid the equivalent of $2,040 USD each.
• January 29, 2009 -- The drug war in Juárez, Mexico has people in fear of going to the hospital where victims of cartel shootings seek medical care. In 2008, 1,600 people died in Juárez drug battles. Bordering U.S. towns such as El Paso are spending millions to increase border security as people flee for their lives and safe medical treatment in the U.S.
• January 15, 2009 --  Israeli shells hit the Gaza Hospital causing sick and injured patients, young and old, to flee its fiery remains. Three destroyed ambulances adore the hospital's charred entry.
